As the first Australian diver to win an Olympic gold medal since 1924, openly gay Mitcham became an overnight icon after the Beijing Olympics. It might have been because of being male model handsome, or simply that he treated his sexuality as being as much a part of him as his hair color. He’s been able to build on his success too, winning four silver medals at the 2010 Commonwealth Games and leading the Mardi Gras Parade in 2009. At just 23 years old, Matthew has endeared his way into our hearts as well as winning the highest sports award in the world. Recently, recovering from an injury, Matthew is still going for the Olympic Trials in April...good luck hero!
